Carrick says Man Utd players showed commitment in 1-1 draw with Leeds

Michael Carrick

Under-fire Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed that the players showed commitment despite the 1-1 draw against Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Red Devils extended their winless run to six matches in all competitions with the result.

Manchester United have only won one in the Premier League this season, earning seven points from seven matches to record their worst start in the history of the League.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 35th minute finishing off a cross from Youri Tielemans.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin restored parity for Leeds United with a powerful finish inside the box in the 51st minute.

Leeds United dominated the latter part of the encounter but they failed to find a winner as the encounter ended 1-1.

Despite extending their winless run, Carrick was pleased with the players’ commitment in the encounter.

He said: “There was definitely that commitment today and it had to be there. There was an edge and intensity to the game. I spoke to the boys this morning about the history of the game and us coming over here to their territory.

“It felt like a fresh start today, where we’re at, accepting it and doing something about it. There was a real purpose to the group the last couple of days and they took it out onto the pitch.

“We are not accepting everything is great by any stretch. Sometimes you do struggle and you have to find a way through it. We need to be stable enough to keep doing the right things. I have no doubts we can go on a good run.”

Carrick was pleased with the performances of Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba while backing them to keep improving.

He concluded: “You look at the midfield with Carlos [Baleba] and Andrey [Santos], that’s a pretty fresh spine of the team through that middle of the pitch.

“Both young players are adapting to life at this football club, and I thought both of them were terrific today.

“I thought they both did really well in midweek. So that’s a massive positive for us.”

In the other Premier League matches on Sunday afternoon, Brighton continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Bournemouth earned their first win of the season by defeating Sunderland 2-0.

Manchester United will return to Premier League action against Bournemouth at Old Trafford next Sunday, while Leeds United will face Sunderland on the same day.
