CAF doubles WAFCON winners’ prize money to $2m
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the winners’ prize money for the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from $1 million to $2 million in a record boost to women’s football.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday, marking a 100% increase from the previous tournament’s $1 million grand prize for the champions.
Motsepe also noted that the increase reflects a massive 900% growth since the current leadership took office, when the winners received just $200,000.
“Since the current CAF leadership assumed office, the prize money of the winner has increased by 900 per cent from $200,000 to $2m and the total prize money has increased by 495 per cent from $975,000 to $5.8m,” he said.

The tournament features an expanded 16-team format with increased financial rewards across all stages.
The total prize pool is boosted by 67% to a staggering $5.8 million, while the runners-up will pocket $750,000, which amounts to a 50% increase from previous years.
The third-place finishers will also receive a 43% boost in their payout, while every qualified country secures at least $150,000 just for participating in the tournament, up from $125,000.
The 2026 WAFCON tournament is scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 26 to August 16, 2026, with the Super Falcons set to slug it out with other African female teams.
