Aguirre credits Mexico fans for Ecuador win
The coach of the Mexican national team, Javier Aguirre, has stated that the players’ connection with the fans was the “driving force” behind Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ecuador.
Aguirre, who was speaking to the media moments after the game, described the electric atmosphere at the Azteca Stadium as the best victory of his career as a coach.
“This connection we have with the fans is a driving force,” he said, noting it had been 40 years since he last saw the Azteca Stadium with such overwhelming energy.
“I’ve had some great victories, but none like today’s, because it’s at home, with your own people,” added Aguirre, who previously managed Mexico at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.
He described the squad as a “true family,” adding that the players deserve everything they are experiencing.

Julián Quiñones opened the scoring for Mexico in the 22nd minute by finishing a blistering counterattack, cutting inside the box to fire into the top corner.
Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage in the 31st minute by capitalizing on a poor defensive turnover from Ecuador. After a quick give-and-go with Quiñones, Jiménez slotted it home to become Mexico’s second-highest all-time goalscorer.
Ecuador’s Piero Hincapié was shown a direct red card via VAR review under the tournament’s strict directive against players covering their mouths during arguments with opponents.
Mexico will stay at the Estadio Azteca for their Round of 16 clash scheduled for Sunday, July 5, 2026. They will face the winner of the match between England and DR Congo.
