Quieroz steps down as Ghana coach after World Cup elimination
Portuguese football tactician Carlos Quieroz has stepped down as the coach of the Ghanaian national team after the African side were eliminated from the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
The 73-year-old was hired on a short-term, four-month contract to stabilize the Black Stars for the World Cup after replacing former coach, Otto Addo.
He successfully navigated Ghana out of Group L into the knockout rounds. The team recorded a 1-0 win over Panama, a tactical 0-0 draw against England, and a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
However, Ghana’s run at the ongoing 2026 World Cup ended in the Round of 32 following a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Colombia in a game played at the Kansas City Stadium on Friday after only registering eight attempts on goal.

Moments after throwing in the towel, the much-travelled Quieroz, who coached Iran at the last World Cup in Qatar, said: “I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more.”
He urged Ghana to push forward in the future, saying: “The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch.”
Queiroz also left a poignant farewell note stating that the team’s long-term success “must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”
Following his resignation, Ghana’s football future now relies on major structural reforms and finding a new permanent head coach for the future.
