Queiroz steps down as Ghana coach for second time in three months

Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as the head coach of the Ghanaian national team following the Black Stars 2-4 home loss to Gambia in a 2027 AFCON qualifying game played in Accra.
 
Queiroz who leaves his role as head coach of the Ghana national team for the second time in three months mutually agreed to terminate his contract with his employers following discussions held in good faith.
 
The departure of Queiroz who was also in charge when Ghana lost their first 2027 AFCON qualifying game against Ivory Coast, was announced in a statement issued by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Thursday.
 
The GFA in the statement noted that the  decision, though not an easy one, was reached with the best interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football at heart.
 
The statement reads, “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate the Service Agreement governing his role as Head Coach of the Black Stars, following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect.
 
“This decision, though not an easy one, was reached with the best interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football at heart. Both parties agreed that under the present circumstances, ending the professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action.

“The Ghana Football Association would like to sincerely thank Carlos Queiroz for his commitment, professionalism and dedication during his time with the Black Stars.
 
“We are grateful for his efforts in helping to build a stronger future for the national team and supporting the development of Ghanaian talent since taking charge ahead of the preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
 
“We also extend our appreciation to his technical staff for their support and contribution to the Black Stars project.
 
“The GFA wishes Mr. Queiroz the very best in his future endeavours. The Association will in due course announce detailed technical arrangements and the next steps regarding the leadership of the Black Stars.” The statement concluded.
 
The former Real Madrid coach was first hired April to replace Otto Addo just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz later stepped down as head coach on July 5 following Ghana’s 1-0 Round of 32 exit against Colombia.

However, he was reappointed by the GFA on September 2, when Queiroz signed a new contract to lead the Black Stars through the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign but he has now left the role after less than a month in charge during his second spell.
