Omolola Didih wins fifth gold for Nigeria at Commonwealth Games

Onome Omolola Didih delivered a stunning performance to win Nigeria’s fifth gold medal women’s 53kg weightlifting event on Monday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

She opened the event with a sensational 93kg lift in the snatch to set a new Commonwealth Record and Games Record, before completing the job in the clean and jerk to finish with a winning total of 206kg, another Games Record.

India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav finished second with a 199kg total, which which also surpassed the previous Games record, and Canada’s Rebeka Groulx won the bronze medal with a lift of 178kg.

It has been a successful day for Team Nigeria’s weightlifters after Eddidiong Joseph Umoafia won the gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event earlier in the day.

Nigeria can now boast of nine medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with five gold, four silver and zero bronze.

It would be recalled that Omolola Didih won three gold medals for Nigeria at the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Egypt.
