Nigeria’s Falconets qualify for FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria’s U20 girls, Falconets, have qualified for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland following a 3-2 aggregate win over Malawi on Saturday.
The Falconets slumped to a 2-1 defeat in Lilongwe but their first leg 2-0 victory was enough to seal a place in the tournament.
The Falconets found themselves behind early in the first half when a defensive mishap allowed a Malawian forward to nod home the opener.
Nigeria came close to responding when Kindness Ifeanyi, a constant threat on the right flank, delivered a tantalizing cross into the heart of the box.
Favour Nkwocha met it with power, but her effort rattled the woodwork, denying the Falconets the equalizer. The Young Scorchers took their 1-0 advantage into the break.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 55th minute, taking advantage of Nigeria’s lapses in concentration.

Substitute Precious Oscar demonstrated elite pressing, pouncing on a Malawian defender who was caught dwelling on the ball.
Oscar dispossessed her opponent and kept her composure to fire past the goalkeeper, restoring Nigeria’s aggregate lead while making it 2-1.
The Falconets gave their all to ensure they snatched a draw but the hosts were resolute as they earned a rare win over Nigeria.
This year’s finals will be hosted by Poland from September 5th – 26th.
The Falconets have featured at every edition since Canada 2002. They have reached the final twice and the semi-finals once.
Nigeria crashed out of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in the second round following a 2-1 defeat to Japan in Colombia.
