Ghana beat Panama with stoppage time winner
The Black Stars of Ghana secured Africa’s second win at the ongoing 2026 World Cup after edging Panama 1-0 in their opening Group L encounter played at the Toronto Stadium.
Panama dominated possession for large parts of the game (63%), managing to keep Carlos Queiroz’s Black Stars pinned back and frustrated throughout a quiet first half.
However, Ghana found their rhythm in the second half of the game, heavily anchored by Manchester City winger, Antoine Semenyo in a highly physical encounter played in rainy conditions.

The breakthrough came for the Black Stars at the 94:04 mark when substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante drove down the left flank and rolled a perfectly placed cross into the box for Caleb Yirenkyi to tap-in from close range to secure all three points for Ghana.
Following England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia earlier in the day, Ghana currently sits second in Group L.
The Black Stars will next play England on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, while Panama faces Croatia on the same day in the second group games.
