Fernandez sends emotional message to Rangers fans over failed title bid

Emmanuel Fernandez

New Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has sent an emotional message to fans of Rangers FC after the club failed in its bid to win the Scottish Championship this season.

Fernandez, who had a stellar season clinching the 2025/26 Rangers Men’s Player of the Year award and was included in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year, said that the team should have done better in the last three games.

The player who was reflecting on Rangers’ 1-3 defeat to Celtic on Sunday (which effectively dashed his team’s title hopes) feels sorry for the fans of the club, as they could have given more in the game.

“First and foremost, I apologise to the fans. We know that we should have done better in the last three games. We feel sorry for the fans,” Fernandez told the Daily Record on Tuesday.

“I couldn’t pinpoint an issue, but I just feel like maybe we needed to have a bit more fight. I can’t say we have been unlucky. I can take a stick and carry it because there are certain moments I probably should have defended better.

“There is nothing I can say about my teammates. I will probably just look at myself, if anything.”

The 24-year-old Nigerian center-back, who was signed from Peterborough United, also added during the question and answer session that it is important for the team to finish the season strongly with two games against Hibernian and Falkirk left before the season ends.

Fernandez said it is important for the team to finish the season strongly.

“But now we have to pick ourselves up. There are two games to go, and we have to win these two games for the fans,” added the Nigeria international.

“I feel like there are still a lot of strong players here, young players, who are going to be in their second season. They can show they are really worth it and are going to fight. When next season comes, we’ll have a good side.”
