Ex-Eagles captain Troost-Ekong converts to Islam
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly embraced Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
The 33-year-old defender, who plays for Qatar Stars League club Al Ahli SC, has taken the Shahadah and accepted Islam in Qatar.
In the viral video, an Islamic scholar responded after William Troost-Ekong recited the Shahadah in Arabic: “Congratulations, you’ve now converted from Christianity to Islam.”
The development was made known by Qatari newspaper Al-Arab, while the video of the Nigerian defender reciting the two testimonies of faith has also circulated on social media.
As of the time of filing in this report, Troost-Ekong has not publicly explained what led to his decision to convert to Islam but the development has attracted attention among football followers in Nigeria and beyond, coming as a significant personal moment for the former Nigeria international.

Troost-Ekong officially retired from international football with the Nigeria national football team (Super Eagles) in December 2025.
With over a decade-long international career, he achieved several major milestones bagging 83 senior caps and scoring 8 goals.
He represented Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, anchoring the defense alongside Leon Balogun in the famous “Oyibo Wall” partnership.
Troost-Ekong captained Nigeria to a silver-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored three goals (including one in the final) and was named Player of the Tournament. He remains the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history.
