Amusan sets Commonwealth Games record to qualify for 100m final
Nigeria’s Queen of the track, Tobiloba Amusan produced a sensational performance to qualify for the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
The two-time gold winner raced to victory in her heat with a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds (+3.8m/s), the fastest time ever recorded in the history of the Games, although the performance will not count as an official record due to the excessive tailwind.
She finished ahead of South Africa’s Marione Fourie, who clocked 12.50 seconds, while Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill secured third place in 12.69 seconds to also progress to the final.

It would be recalled that Amusan won gold medals in the event in 2018 and 2022, she is on course to become the first athlete to win three successive Commonwealth Games titles in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Amusan became the first-ever Nigerian world champion and world record holder in an athletics event when she won the 2022 World Championships 100 m hurdles gold medal, setting the current world record of 12.12 seconds (+0.9 m/s) in the semi-final, followed up by a 12.06 seconds (+2.5 m/s) in the final.
She won back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100 m hurdles and is also a two-time African Games champion.
