Why I turned down Super Eagles for Italy –Kayode
Brentford FC defender Michael Kayode has confirmed that he was once approached by Nigeria to play for the Super Eagles but he chose to turn down the opportunity and play for the Italian national team instead.
The 23-year-old who is known for his exceptional pace, defensive tenacity, and distinctively long throw-ins said that Nigeria approached him to play for the Eagles but he had already made up his mind to play for Italy.
Kayode who originally moved from ACF Fiorentina to Brentford on loan in January 2025 said that he did not know about his Italy call-up until after the game against Chelsea last season.
“I didn’t know about the Italy call-up before the game [against Chelsea]; I found out at the final whistle, on my phone,” Kayode told reporters on Tuesday. “It was an incredible emotion, especially after such a big win.”
‘‘Nigeria approached me,’’ he confirmed.

Kayode whose transfer to Brentford was made transfer permanent in May 2025 for a reported €17.5 million also explained that his decision to turn down the chance to play for the Super Eagles was because he had represented Italy at youth level.
“It was a very easy decision. I went through all the youth teams here. Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams,” he said.
“I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honour.” Kayode added.
Recall that in September 2026, Italy head coach Roberto Mancini handed Kayode his first senior Italy call-up for the UEFA Nations League matches against Belgium, France, and Turkey.
The player has also had an impactful start to his current English Premier League campaign, notably helping Brentford secure a massive 3–0 clean-sheet victory over Chelsea.
