Super Falcons star Esther Okoronkwo has suffered a knee injury and she is expected to be out of action for six weeks.

She sustained a knee injury during AFC Toronto’s league clash against Halifax on Sunday in a match that ended goalless.

AFC Toronto’s coach Marco Milanovic confirmed that Okoronkwo will be out for six weeks while expressing confidence that the team can cope in her absence.

He said: “We do have an update. Esther suffered a bit of a meniscus damage to her knee and the initial prognosis is that she’ll be out for about six weeks,” Milanovic said.

“She’s obviously a key player for us, just like Sam was. When she first came in, she was initially out for the season.

“I love this group of players, I have a lot of confidence in them. So, any injury presents an opportunity for someone else.

“We have a lot of depth up top and I’m very confident that those players will take the opportunity and make the most of it.”

Okoronkwo has been a key player for AFC Toronto since joining the club in February 2025.

She played a key role in AFC Toronto’s inaugural Northern Super League season, recording 11 goals and a league-leading 8 assists across regular season and playoffs and was named the NSL assist leader.

She has recorded one goal, and one assist this season for the club in 123 minutes in all competitions.

Nigerians will be hoping that she is fit enough to be part of the Super Falcons WAFCON squad as the team aims to defend the title they won in Morocco in 2024.

Okoronkwo played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON glory with two goals and six assists.

She made her debut for the Super Falcons in a friendly match against Jamaica in 2021, she has represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2024 Olympics and the 2024 WAFCON.

The 2026 WAFCON is set to kick off on July 25 in Morocco.
