Abua, Bassey emerge champions of CBN Tennis Championship
Top seed Abua Cannice defeated defending champion, Michael Akpan Emmanuel, 2-0, ( 6-1, 6-2) to win the Men’s Single’s title of the 47th edition of the Central Bank of Nigeria Senior Tennis Championship in Abuja on Sunday.
The women’s category also produced a new champion as Etoro Bassey brushed aside Ogunjobi Success 2-1 ( 3-6, 6-0, 6-2) to lift the trophy.
In the men’s double event, women’s doubles event, Abua Cannice paired Mohammed Musa to defeat the duo of Michael Akpan Emmanuel and Sylvanus Ajano.
While in the women’s double event, Mohammed Khadijat and Ogunjobi Success, combined to beat the duo of Etoro Bassey and James Favour 6-2, 6-7(2), 10-6 to win the ladies doubles trophy.
Abua, who was rated number one in the draws for the men’s singles, dedicated the trophy to God while setting his sights on the David Cup.

He said: “I dedicate this title to God for His mercy and making me proud to be who I am.
“As far as tennis is concerned, this is just the beginning of my reign. But I need to be focused and take each game as they come.
“My next target is the Davis Cup qualifier against Morocco, in which I need to do well for myself and my country.”
In the men’s singles wheelchair category, defending champion, Adewale Alex defeated Bankole Rasaq 2-0 (6-0, 6-1) to retain his title, while the women’s singles wheelchair trophy went to the defending champion, Usoh Andrea, who defeated Enwerem Chika, 2-0 (6-0, 6-1) in the final.
In his address at the grand finale of the championship, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Yemi Cardoso, represented by the Acting Director, Corporate Communication Department, Mrs Hakama Sidi Ali, commended the participants for their commitment to the game.
